The term SWAMI means Master, and one might assume that the project's name derives from this term. However, the origin of the name is somewhat less obvious. Our professional life on the beautiful Torrey Mesa is inextricably linked to the Pacific Ocean and to its attendant surf culture. The San Diego area is known colloquially as "BioBeach" because of its high concentration of Biotechnology expertise. We chose to celebrate our San Diego location by naming the project after the popular local surf spot Swami's (you've heard it in the Beach Boy's tune "Surfin' USA"). The name of the surf spot comes from its proximity to the Self Realization Fellowship, founded by Swami Paramahansa Yoganandan. Our logo was inspired by the beautiful Lotus tower that greets visitors to the SRF in Encinitas.
